I know you said you had cleaned the CD, and that you were sent a replacement CD by Microsoft, but it hasn't been possible to compare the results of the two I have opened a case with Microsoft technical support but they have been unable to determine the cause. But on the up side if you where to loose that one you could use any OEM/Retail Microsoft CD of the same type to install from.The answer here is Don't loose etc.

Everything is working good the only problem is that i can not change the partition for Windows XP Home Edition. The repair attempt arose from a boot failure due to the hard drive acting up (tapping it resolved that boot failure but was running into hangs - hence the repair). If you need to back up data to it and then be able to retrieve it onto another computer that does not support NTFS (eg. you dont need to format the drive, simply delete C:\Windows and C:\ProgramFiles so windows start fresh.Click to expand...

You cannot "borrow" someone elses XP CD because the OEM CD that came with your Dell PC was specifically tied to your machine and was overlaid with drivers and other software So if you burn a gparted or another cd make sure you do it at the slowest speed. I am personally afraid that if you mess around with the HD, it may byte you the end. if I happen to get it to work before you reply I'll post what I did, but at this point I'm stuck.
